IRON MAN

The last time I read an Ironman comic was years back when I was a kid and probably when he makes special appearances in Spideyman and the Fantastic 4 comics. But only when it was announced that Robert Downey Jr. will play the role of Tony Stark, I was syked.

And yeah, I saw IRONMAN yesterday, one of the special screenings due to the Labour day holiday and oh boy, The movie was a perfect entertainer, funny Super hero movie with pretty good gadgets too. Downey was amazing as the charismatic-playboy billionaire owner of the Start Industries, Tony Stark. He pulled off the role easily.
The suit was amazing, especially after the suit evolved from the rusty unfinished first suit made at afghanistan to the shiny armour with red. Jeff Bridges as Obadiah Stane was good too.

I guess the Marvel franchise is back especially after few debacles after X-men: The Last Stand, Ghost Rider, Fantastic 4 movies. A total entertainer comes close to Spidey 2(realized that after prestidigitator asked me whether it is better than Spiderman 2)

Like Nicholas mentioned, ” ..I dare you not to get entertained”

Now I’ll have to wait for The Dark Knight and The Incredible Hulk. Dark Knight is gonna be a joy ride for me(I think, I hope) and I wish Incredible Hulk is good for Edward Nortan’s sake.

EDIT: It seems that after the end credits Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury talks about the Avengers…damn! . Is it true? Did I miss it? Looks I’ll have to see the movie again.

Bob Dylan receives honorary Pulitzer Prize

I don’t know about you all, but I always tell myself that Dylan must have received a Nobel Prize on category of Literature for his contribution of awesome songs with simple lyrics.

I always bow to ‘His Awesomeness’.

There will be Blood

After watching Last of The Mohicans, My Left Foot (eons ago), Gangs of New York I have to admit that I was very impressed by and therefore have become a fan of Daniel Day Lewis. A Method actor, takes his roles seriously….actually very seriously, I’ve read about it. This man is sincere and crazy.

there-will-be-blood-poster.jpg
So I was very happy that Daniel Day Lewis got the Oscar. I heard it was a easy task for the jury members, cos it was like Daniel Day Lewis should win. From many blogs I I hoped he’d win, cos I want all my best actors to win an Oscar or get their second oscar( don’t worry Johnny, you’ll also get it). So since it was an Oscar movie, PVR( only PVR) released the movie in Mumbai.

there-will-be.jpg
So I went for this movie which is about a man Daniel Plainview(Daniel Day Lewis) an oil prospector/businessman along with his adopted son H.W. Plainview(Dillon Freasier). When Daniel gets a tip from a Paul Sunday (Paul Dano) about existence of a lot of oil in a remote place, he goes in pursuit and meets Eli Sunday(Paul Dano), Paul’s twin brother, a Pastor who has his own ambitions.

Amazing Background score by Johnny Greenwood. Paul Dano after Little Miss Sunshine gave a mighty performance as a Pastor Eli Sunday which took me a back in time( just a few years ago), especially at the scene when he pounces on his father and the scenes where he gets back on Daniel at the Church. Dillon Freasier as H.W Plainview, now that someone I would want to talk about. Boy of few words in the film, but his silence, his way of noticing people and what they talk has amazed me of how young kids can really act. Now that’s where Silence is Golden. Good that Paul Thomas Anderson gave him a good screen space. Daniel Day Lewis, well he got the Oscar for his performance, therefore I don’t have to mention anything else.

Reflections and Now

Its funny when I come to think of the days passed by. How each day has made the way I am right now. I don’t exactly live nostalgic world, but a rather sophisticated one. In spite of that I still think that I am that thin kid who can around and do many things. And then every morning when I look myself in the mirror, I see that guy standing in front of me. Thin hands, held-in pot belly and then released out thinking, ” Who am I kidding?”, and think damn, ” I am not that young any more.”

Robert Downey Jr.

20051231kisskissbangbang.jpgSince Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, I have a been an avid fan of Robert Downey Jr. (yes, the coke head). He reassured his position in my list of top class actors after Zodiac.amzodiac_0312.jpg
downey-gauntlet.jpg Therefore I was kinda thrilled when I first heard that he will be playing Tony Stark in Iron Man, but he sure surprised me when I took a look at this picture for which he is playing a black American in Tropic Thunder. Gone Baby Gone

Director ; Ben Affleck
Cast: Cassey Affleck, Morgan freeman, Ed Harris, Amy Ryan, Michelle Monaghan

gbg.jpg
Adapted from the novel of the same name, Ben Affleck(?) gives us the story of Private Detectives Patrick Kenzie(Cassey Affleck) and Angie( Michelle Monaghan) in pursuit of a missing girl with the help of the local Police headed by Morgan Freeman and Ed Harris.

Bloody good performances by Cassey Affleck and Ed Harris. I love this movie, but not only for the performances and the suspense, but also the ending cos of how difficult it is to sometimes to me to differentiate between the right and wrong. Sometimes doing the right act may not be that right act to person next to you. It is all about doing the right thing, right?

Mithya

mith.jpg

After Rajat Kapoor’s ‘Mixed Doubles’, he teamed up with Ranvir Shorey again and gave us this clever, well acted, black comedy movie called Mithya, (Impostor).

Mithya is about VK,  an aspiring actor, who’d anything to get a good role in films. He takes too much sugar for his tea, hangs around in the sets, lends his voice to cheap cartoons and spends the rest of his night with a bottle of whiskey and a free glass with one gets with it, until life takes an unexpected turn. It so happened that VK resembles a don, Rajabhai. Therefore a gang not so in favour of Rajabhai decides to kill Rajabhai and replace him with VK. As an Actor, from being a junior artist in Movies, VK gets main cast(crucial one) in real life….and series of  unexpected events follows.

mit8s.jpgThe film’s biggest asset are the performances. Excellent cast for an excellent story and screenplay. Thankfully my money was not wasted.

sad. This guy was so close to the gold mine. He had the honour of acting as Joker. Not everybody gets that.

He was a good actor. RIP.

Taare Zameen Par

The new Aamir Khan movie was allover the news( alright nowadays all Hindi movies are a intergral part of the NEWS channels), the Times of India gave it a 4 star rating.

Few months back, I remember hearing the people talk about one of the awaited movies, “AAG”. Even though the people panned the movie, I did not heed to their words. Oh I wish I had only listened. It has made me lose respect over my greatest Indian Actor. The very feel of Hindi movies changed.

Taare Zameen Par, didn’t quite strike my mind until I found out that the main protagonist gets send to a boarding school. Boarding Schools, well, I studied in one. It didn’t make me a great person, but it became an integral part of my life, the way I am and the way I think.

So I went for the movie, and it didn’t occur to me that most of the people in the multiplex were crying as I was trying to control myself. All controversies aside, this movies is not bas at all. Darsheel Safary gave a heartwarming performance as Ishaan Awasti, a child with an learning disability illness dyselxia who lives in a world where he is pushed in the field of Academics by his Parents and Teachers in this very competitive world until his illness is recogonised by his Art Teacher played by Aamir Khan. Special mention about Tisca Chopra as Ishaan’s Mother. It does have a scene inspired From Calvin and Hobbes(Similar to Calvin dreaming about destroying Aliens during an Examination.)

the holidays again

After a long time I reached home. After a long time time I am writing a post.

To get rid of the unnecessary expenditure I decided to to travel home by train. 2nd Class sleeper and it wasn’t pleasant. Got in the train by 1140 hours and my God!, how hot can it get? and I haven’t even reached Kerala yet(the weather is even hot and humid in Kerala). So I’m sitting in the train, and before I reached a station’ Thane’, this higida(9, jhakka) comes to me asks me for money. My attitude towards them have changed since the last Christmas. I didn’t think they were that bad at all, until this guy came over. He asked me for 50 bucks. I said,” No. I can’t give you 50.” Then he starts telling that I spend Rs.20 for a 2 litre water bottle and and will(might) spend Rs.50 for chicken Biriyani( spicy indian dish), so I have to give him/her 50 rupees. I was thinking,”Damn!! the next time he’ll probably explain me the ‘e=m(c*c)’ way as in why I must give him a 100 bucks.” I said, No, I will give him 50 cucks( I said the same sentence cos I can’t figure out another sentence to tell him in Hindi, but I can understand it). So this guy threatened me saying that he’ll bring in the whole gang. I stayed motionless(actually I was shit scared inside). Then I gave him 10 bucks , he walked away, with the money of course.

The rest of the journey was boring and hot again. The train was 1 and half hours late also. Finally the next day I reached Cochin at 1530 hours and the first thing I had in mind was not to catch the another train and go home, but to go buy a set of DVDs and then go home.

Bought Once, 3:10 to Yuma, Ratatouille, Zodiac, Knocked Up, The Good German and Sweet Land. Something to keep me occupied for the holidays.

Anyway, You folks have a happy holidays. Merry Christmas too.
